Overview - isi certification quality compliance Registration

What is it?

ISI Mark Certification is granted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and signifies that a product conforms to a specific Indian Standard (IS). The ISI mark is mandatory for over 500 product categories - from electrical cables and helmets to packaged drinking water and steel pipes - under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

Mandatory vs. voluntary

For products in the mandatory ISI list (Schedule I of the BIS Act), manufacturing or selling without ISI certification is a criminal offence. For other products, ISI certification is voluntary but strongly recommended as a quality signal.

How it works

BIS grants a licence to use the ISI mark on products that have been tested by a BIS-recognised lab and found conforming to the relevant IS standard. The licence must be renewed annually and is subject to surveillance inspections.

Who grants it?

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) - under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. BIS has 5 regional offices and 20 branch offices across India.

  • Why It Applies
  • Manufacturers of products in the mandatory ISI list
  • Products like electrical wiring, PVC pipes, pressure cookers, helmets, packaged drinking water, LPG cylinders, and 500+ others legally require ISI certification before they can be manufactured or sold.
  • Importers of ISI-mandatory products
  • Foreign manufacturers wishing to sell ISI-mandatory products in India must also obtain BIS product certification. ISI is not limited to domestic manufacturers.
  • Manufacturers wanting a quality differentiator
  • For non-mandatory product categories, ISI certification signals quality to buyers - especially in B2B, government procurement, and organised retail.
  • Companies supplying to government projects
  • ISI-certified products. Certification is a prerequisite to supply many categories to PWD, railways, defence, and public utilities.
