Overview - design renewal ip protection designs Registration
What is it?
A registered design in India is initially protected for 10 years from the date of registration. It can be renewed once for a further 5 years (total 15 years maximum) by filing the renewal application and paying the fee before the 10-year term expires.
No grace period
Unlike patents, the Designs Act, 2000 does not provide a grace period or restoration mechanism for late renewal. The 10-year deadline is absolute. A missed renewal means permanent, irrecoverable lapse.
Lapse consequences
If the renewal is not filed within 10 years, the design registration lapses and enters the public domain - meaning anyone can legally copy your product's visual appearance with no legal recourse.
What we do
We audit your design portfolio, track the renewal deadline for each design, send 90-day and 60-day advance reminders, and file the renewal well before the 10-year expiry - without fail.

- Profile
- Why It Applies
- Design owners approaching the 10-year mark
- If your design was registered ~8–9 years ago, the renewal window is approaching. There is no grace period or restoration - act now.
- Companies with multiple registered designs
- Managing multiple design renewal deadlines manually invites error. One missed deadline permanently costs you a valuable IP asset.
- Businesses that acquired designs through M&A or assignment
- New owners may be unaware of approaching deadlines. We audit and establish a proactive renewal system from day one.
- Fashion, textile, and product design businesses
- Design-intensive industries often have large portfolios. We track every design renewal alongside patents and trademarks on one calendar.
- Licensors with active design licensing agreements
- A lapsed design nullifies the licensing agreement. Renewal is non-negotiable when licensing revenue is at stake.

- Only 15 Years Total Protection Available
- Design registration lasts a maximum of 15 years in India (10 + 5). Do not waste any of that window through administrative oversight.
- Protects Ongoing Revenue
- A lapsed design removes enforcement rights entirely - competitors can freely copy your registered product appearance the moment it lapses.
- IP Portfolio Integrity
- Clean, maintained IP portfolios are valued more highly by investors and acquirers. Lapsed registrations are red flags in due diligence.
